Craiglee Shiraz 2016

Decanted and let breath for an hour before tasting. Pure, focussed and precise this year. A cooler vintage has produced silky smooth shiraz, laden with cherry, raspberry, mulberry and plum leading the charge. As it opens a puff of dark spice and a few extra layers of aroma and flavour are released. Fantastic depth and some helpful well balanced grip on the length which we have come to expect from Pat. No compromises here. Wine of excellent quality but try to stay calm and be patient enough to give it few years at least in the bottle, it will reward you with a cherry on top if you do. Don’t wait for the reviews guys this will be a sort after vintage.

“Any site anywhere in the world that can produce a wine that lasts for 100 years is worth being replanted,” said John Brown of Milawa fame after a cache of 1872 Craiglee Sunbury Shiraz was found buried at the winery in the 1950s. The 10 hectare vineyard – located on alluvial sands over river stones – is now over thirty five years old. Vinification takes place in open cement fermenters. A small batch is partially barrel fermented. Maturation follows in new and old French and American oak for between 12 and 18 months. The wine is tightly structured with earthy, pepper, raspberry black olive characters and firm tannins; with age becoming more earthy, complex and loose-knit with softer tannins. Andrew Caillard MW

“A winery with a proud 19th-century record, Craiglee recommenced winemaking in 1976 after a prolonged hiatus. Produces one of the finest cool climate Shiraz in Australia, redolent of cherry, licorice and spice in the better (warmer) vintages, lighter-bodied in the cooler ones. Mature vines and improved viticulture have made the wines more consistent (except 2011) over the past 10 years or so.” – James Halliday
