Yangarra Old Vine Grenache 2018 McLaren Vale
$35.00 – $90.00
Smart wine from best Grenache vineyard in the Southern Hemisphere. This wine has restored my faith in this variety as a straight varietal wine. Usually when I try a straight Grenache I feel a bit underwhelmed by it and walk away thinking “yep that’s why it gets blended a lot of the time,” I really enjoy the softness and fruit forward styles that it produces but I am always left wondering “why so unbalanced” or “where did the rest of the wine go?” This vineyard is always the exception to the rule. Good structure, nice line of acidity and wonderful flavour from start to finish. If you like this one look out for Rouleur or Dom Valentine Grenache as well.
97 Points | Wine Companion 2020: It is a glorious example of grenache picked earlier than in the past, retaining all the freshness of red cherries/berries; spices starting to build, tannins beautifully shaped
97 Points | James Halliday Top 100 Wines of the Year 2018: Planted in 1946 on a sand dune in the cooler, elevated northeast of McLaren Vale. Hand-picked and sorted, then wild fermented. It is a glorious example of grenache picked early, retaining all the freshness of red cherries/berries, spices starting to build, tannins beautifully shaped.
