Cantina Zaccagnini 2018 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

Montepulciano is the most important variety in the Abruzzo region of east-central Italy and I remember my first run in with this grape, it was described to me as cherries dipped in chocolate. From then I have always judged Monte’s on that premise. It is a wine of medium-body, with silky tannins, a pleasant mouth feel and a subtle finish. Coffee tones, chocolate and cherry supported by fine boned tannins and lengthy structure. Balanced soft persistent and ideal with rich Italian sauces such as Osso Bucco and Bolognese.

2018 is a richer riper year than the 2017, rounder, fuller and more of that wonderfully intense dark cherry dipped in cocoa that we all love. Overall a very strong vintage in the top half of Italy.
