Dominique Portet Fontaine Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

An excellent example of what amazing value wines Yarra Valley can produce. You will have a hard time finding a better value Cabernet in Australia. Medium bodied approachable style with bright uplifted palate showing forward cassis, violets and hints of plum, raspberry and herbals creeping in on the mid palate which is adding both complexity and length. Superbly balanced for a young wine and  bit of a favourite of some of the local vineyard crews. Grapes come from a range of warmer vineyards in the northern and southern end of the Yarra Valley. Soils are rocky and hungry, with a clay base and lots of broken sandstone. These north-facing sites are excellent for Cabernet that has clear, juicy, concentrated fruit with soft, silky tannins. Hand-picked and 10 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.

Gold Medal, Yarra Valley Wine Show 95 points

‘An array of bright violet, cassis and blueberry aromas lead to a supple and elegant palate that has sappy cut in the mid-palate, all wrapped up tight and bright in fresh, juicy tannins. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Malbec. Drink or hold. Screw cap.’ James Suckling 91 points
